MADE IN BIRMINGHAM
Allen & Freeman later Carpenter and Allen
1. 37 Baker Street, Small Heath
2. 75/77 Lombard Street
The
first reference to Allen & Freeman was found in the 1906 Kelly
directory for Birmingham and gave their address as 37 Baker Street,
Small Heath, Birmingham. The 1924 Chamber of Commerce section of Kelly
records their representative as being J H Allen, both he and the
company were also listed in the 1928, and 1930 Chamber of Commerce
listing, however there was no listing in the Chamber of Commerce
section of the 1934 Kelly, though the company themselves were still
listed in the Garden Syringe Manufacturers section.
An
advertisement in the Ironmongers Buyers Guide of 1937, page 254, showed
them as being at the Everest Works, Lombard Street, Birmingham. The
advertisement has a subtitle as Carpenter and Allen Ltd. The link with
Carpenter appears to have taken place in 1930 when information from
Companies House indicates that Thomas R Carpenter entered into an
agreement with Joseph Henry Allen of 75 Lombard Street, Birmingham on
24th March 1930, the new company being named Carpenter and Allen. Later
in 1930 a further agreement was made whereby J H Allen sold the
business to T R Carpenter, the agreement being dated 6 August 1930. It
appears that Mr Allen did not leave the business as he is mentioned in
various papers until his retirement during May 1936.
The trading style of Allen and Freeman remained until 28 July 1948 when it officially changed to Carpenter and Allen.
The
advertisement shows a number of syringe sprays including the 'ANDEFF'
spray syringe and 'The Everest' syringe together with the 'Lombard' a
double-action self-supplying spray syringe
References within the
Companies House documents show that T R Carpenter stayed with the
business until 28 November 1951 when it appears to have been taken over
by a company called Warne, Wright & Rowland. Records within
documents obtained from Companies House in connection with another
spraying machine company indicate that in 1963 the part of Warne Wright
& Rowland engaged in the manufacture of sprayers became part of
Associated Sprayers Ltd; later to become part of Hozelock. Carpenter
& Allen subsequently became part of Benjamin Priest Group of
Companies, though by 1974 was a non-trading company. The Benjamin
Priest Group was wound up in March 1986 and Carpenter and Allen ceased
to exist on 16 June 1987.
