Birmingham newspaper production began in the eighteenth century and the
most successful of Birmingham titles at this time was The Birmingham
Gazette and General Correspondent, first issued as a weekly publication
on Monday 16th November 1741 by Thomas Aris, a London printer and
stationer who had moved to Birmingham and started his bookselling & printing business
in the High Street.
The newspaperI was first known as The Birmingham Gazette amd moved
to daily publication in 1862, eventually becoming popularly known as Aris’s Birmingham Gazette. It survived until 1956 when it was merged
with the Birmingham Post.
