Ten Acres & Stirchley Co-op. Ten Acres seems to be a forgotten area of Birmingham, so why Ten Acres and Stirchley what is the connection and why were they seperate from the Birmingham Co-op?

Hope these pic's have loaded ok... they are of TASCOS on the Pershore Road in Stirchley circa 1953... this was the grocers store - not the big department store on Hazelwell Street. My nan Rose Lovesey (nee Hickey) is the tall lady on the step on the 1st pic and 5th on the right on the 2nd pic. I don't know who the others are but I believe one of the men could be called Gordon who later went on the work at the Woodlands Park Co-op on the Bournville / Northfield border... he used to deliver groceries to us on a Saturday well into the 70s - some 20 or so years after my nan had left the Co-op (she was always brand loyal).

I think Wendy Pearson (who wrote a book on Kings Norton a few years ago) and who lives in Ten Acres is currently compiling a book on the Ten Acres Area...

Excellent and welcome Little Nell.

I recently learnt that my father had a spell as a milkman at Tascos, Sirchley while living at the family home in Oxford St.

It's nice to know the TASCOS name isn't forgotten yet!
The problem is, when TASCOS became part of the old Birmingham Co-op in 1971, the threw away all the historical stuff, so now, when we are trying to reaearch any of it, there are very few official records. Central Library have a few bits and pieces and the Co-op history group have some more, but TASCOS stuff is very thin on the ground- so top marks for the above pictures!!!

Back to my original question;

Why Ten Acres and Stirchley, no other area in Birmingham had its own Co-op area(did it?)? Why Ten Acres, it seems to be a little known area?

This link (to the madeinbirmingham site) might provide an answer...

http://www.madeinbirmingham.org/coop.htm

Linda Chew who wrote the article has written a book about the Co-op. I met her at Stirchley library during a talk one morning and I gave her copies of the above pictures. I believe they have now gone to the Co-op museum/archives in Margaret St.

Little Nell - I did indeed meet you at Stirchley Library and loved the photographs. We did do photo- copies for the archive but if it were possible, we would like to get proper copies and add the names and some information. Contact me, if you wish via the organiser of this forum or via Stirchley Library.

I was interested in your emails on Tascos. I started work in the Check office in 1949 in Umberslade Rd when Helen Walker was in charge and Eva Heaven was deputy. I went round the different branches giving out the divi slips and collecting the pass books for making up, we had to work weekends to make the books up. I also worked on the punched card machines keeping account of the check books and balancing them with the books of the different departments. I then went on to work at the Works Dept, under Jack Edwards who was then the manager. Frankie Grail was foreman Plumber, Lou Lee Forman carpenter, Charlie Orton Foreman Electrician, Ron Baker Foreman Painter and Decorator, I could go on. I met my husband who also became foreman Plumber after his apprenticeship. My sister, Aunt, Uncle, Brother in law worked in different departments over the years
