It has been drawn to my attention that the former works of the Lanchester Motor Company in Montgomery Street, Sparkbrook, has been awarded local listing status, offering extra protection from demolition.

Members of Birmingham City Council's conservation and heritage panel said they believed the building played a key part in the foundation and development of the city's car industry. The local listing status means that owners must seek council planning committee approval for any changes or demolition.

The building is currently vacant.

A full report of this can be found on page 10 of the Birmingham Mail Extra of Thursday 19 February 2009, from where the above information was taken.

Now the subject of occupancy has been revived, I had the opportunity and took it of going inside the building in September 1995 on the occasion of the Lanchester Centenary event that took place in Centenary Square Birmingham and at other sites in Birmingham connected with the company also some events in Coventry.

At the time I think that the building was occupied by an organisation called Manganese Bronze, part of someone else no doubt, but I seem to recall that they manufactured metal powders. I did take a number of photographs of the visit and many more of the 4 day event, I'll try to dig them out because I do remember taking many pictures at the time.

Manganese Bronze was part of the BSA group.
