I have a compass maker (Richard Simpson living in Suffolk Street, marrying as a widower in 1817 in St Philips and having 4 children baptised there between 1818 and 1825) and a spectacle frame maker (Henry Smith b abt 1810 in Staffordshire, died between 1845-1851 living at Perry Barr in 1841) in my family tree.

I am pleased to have 2 examples of the "1000 trades" of Birmingham represented. How can I find out more about these? Would they have worked for themselves or in a factory?

Best wishes
Jill Harvey
